Thanissara started practice in 1975 in the Burmese school and was a Theravada nun for 12 years in the Forest School of Ajahn Chah. She is co-director of Dharmagiri Hermitage and Outreach in South Africa where, with the support of San Francisco Insight, they initiated a successful HIV/Aids outreach program. She has taught internationally for the last 20 years and has an MA in Buddhist Psychotherapy from the Karuna Institute and Middlesex University, UK. She is a lead teacher for the Community Dharma Leaders' program.
