There’s a beautiful vision that calls many of us in which we connect our inner practice with our response and vocation in the world. We find it in Indigenous traditions where spirituality isn’t cut off from community and daily life. And in the amazing figures of the Jewish prophets, who have this deep calling and are also advocates on behalf of the poor and oppressed. This tradition led directly to Jesus and Christianity. In the Buddhist tradition, it’s also there: the vision of one who would help others and be committed to awakening at the same time. It is rooted in the deep aspiration: “May my awakening be connected with the intention to help others. May they be inseparable.”
