Cultivating Equanimity: The Happiness of a Heart in Balance and Peace

Nikki Mirghafori

Nikki Mirghafori

Equanimity is a crown jewel of Buddhist practice. It is the unshakable balance of mind-heart born of the perfection of wisdom and love. Equanimity is neither aloof nor cool, as it has been commonly (and mistakenly) imagined, but rather it works to imbue the heart with tremendous stability and caring presence. Equanimity is the fourth and final brahmavihāra (heavenly dwelling), imbuing lovingkindness, compassion, and vicarious joy with grounding balance. As the seventh factor of awakening, the development of equanimity is necessary for advancing in the path. It guards the mind-heart in the midst of the eight worldly winds of gain/loss, fame/disrepute, pleasure/pain, and praise/blame, which each afflict our human lives at one time or another. Equanimity is such a rich and deep teaching that the Visuddhimagga (Path of Purification) teaches ten different types of equanimity. Cultivating equanimity is paramount for a heart-mind that remains in balance, peace, and happiness at every stage of our practice.

The Wisdom of Storytelling: The Power of Story to Awaken Hearts

While we’re encouraged in Buddhist traditions to let go of the stories we tell ourselves, Buddhism has used storytelling to impart the teachings of the Buddha for thousands of years. In this workshop, we’ll practice honoring our life experiences, bringing mindfulness to listening and speaking, and understanding one another more deeply. In exploring techniques for crafting compelling story and narrative, we'll also learn how the process itself helps us develop perspective and supports a sense of shared openness and vulnerability.

Mindfulness with Breathing: Doorway to Wisdom

The breath is precious. From the first inhale at birth to the last exhale at death, the breath is our constant companion, and serves as many peoples’ introduction to meditation practice. As the Ānāpānasti sutta teaches us, it is also the doorway to the depths of Dhamma. This daylong will use the Ānāpānasti sutta as a roadmap to steadying the heart and mind, pointing us to freedom. We will explore this foundational teaching through guided meditations, talks, and Q&A.
