We’re working with conditioned habits of mind, so we have to put in effort to be
continuously aware of them. This effort really begins to collect and stabilize the mind, and we can start to see
these habits more clearly. The mind is not so different from a sack of potatoes. There’s a weightiness to it. When
you let go of a sack of potatoes, it just goes clunk and sits there—steady, stable. It’s not so different with the
mind. The clunk is really the mind not deviating from the present moment. It’s not drifting off. The mind is
stabilized on just what’s happening in the here and now.
