We cannot close off to pain and still feel joy and aliveness—that’s the trade-off. When we start to feel numb and we want to start feeling alive again, we need to be willing to embrace also feeling pain. What we’re really practicing is seeing what is the wisest and kindest way to hold what is happening in this body in this particular moment.
