"Mindfulness, the aware, balanced acceptance of present experience, is at the heart of what the Buddha taught.”
—Sylvia Boorstein

Tere Abdala-Romano

Tere Abdala-Romano grew up in Mexico City as a devoted Catholic girl in a family of Lebanese origin. She has an MA in Business Administration (MBA) and a another BA and MA in geography; is fluent in Spanish (her preferred language) English and Italian, and speaks some French and Portuguese as well; and is also an artist (painting).

Tere married a Jewish man and had three daughters, now adults, with whom she remains very close. Her husband passed away 2011, and she now administers the international business her late husband created in Mexico City. She has introduced a mindfulness program for the top executives and managers in the company (90 people), and is working on expanding the program to include the rest of her 850 employees.

Tere's first introduction to Buddhism was through Tibet House in Mexico City, where she attended numerous retreats under diverse lamas from all traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. After moving to Los Angeles 15 years ago, she participated in Tibetan Buddhist studies at the Los Angeles branch of the Asian Classics Institute, and also continued attending retreats in Northern California with Allan Wallace.

Tere connected with Vipassana practice through InsightLA, under the guidance and personal mentoring of Trudy Goodman, who has been her teacher ever since. Tere has been a member of InsightLA's Teacher Development Group for 10 years, and is currently on its Board of Directors. She is a graduate of Spirit Rock's Community Dharma Leaders program, and has also been through the MBSR Practicum training. She has developed a keen understanding of human psychology via participating in diverse types of therapies for almost 30 years, including individual, couples, mother-daughter, family and group therapies.

Although her business keeps her busy and requires her to travel often to Mexico City, Tere manages to maintain a free and flexible schedule. She is looking forward to freeing herself more from the business in the near future to focus on the Dharma, which has been her passion for more than 20 years.
