Ram Dass often told about the woman who approached him after he'd spoken about both exalted and serene states that he had achieved through meditation and said, "I feel the same way about knitting."
Women have for centuries gathered together to knit, or crochet, or tat, or quilt, or embroider or needlepoint. They companioned each other. They could exchange ideas, and dreams, and worries while they did their craft since the handwork was automatic and focused attention rather than required attention.
That's what we'll do in this group. We'll sit quietly for one hour--on chairs or zafus, whatever is comfortable--doing our individual craft-work. During the second hour, as we continue to craft, people will be able to talk about what's on their mind as they would with a group of friends. This is not a craft instruction group: people need to do their own work. Nor is it a therapy group: the sharing of life challenges, when it happens, is just so that they be heard by compassionate listeners. Sharing is optional. Remaining in companionable silence is also a pleasure.
