More Information About Monday Night Dinner

Whether this is your first time volunteering at Spirit Rock or you have been coming for months or years, we welcome you to our sangha of volunteers - we truly couldn’t do it without you!

Worker Dress

All kitchen workers must wear the following when working in the kitchen:

  • Sturdy, closed-toed shoes with good traction
  • Long Pants
  • Shirts with sleeves
  • Apron (will be provided)

In addition, all kitchen workers must do the following:

  • Restrain hair if appropriate
  • Nails should be trimmed and clean
  • Wear minimal jewelry (only wedding bands on fingers)

For safety, sanitation and aesthetic reasons, the following dress is discouraged in the kitchen:

  • Sandals
  • High-heeled shoes
  • Leather or other slippery-soled shoes
  • Shorts
  • Low-cut jeans
  • Halter tops
  • Sleeveless shirts
  • Dangling Jewelry (long earrings, necklaces, bracelets, etc.)
  • Fingernail polish

To Prevent Slips and Falls:

  • Place rubber traction mats on floors
  • Clean up spills and leakages immediately

Learn Proper Knife Handling to Prevent Cuts:

  • Position non-cutting hand in a “bear-claw”
  • Walk with knife by side, with sharp edge pointed behind you
  • Use appropriate size knife for the job
  • Refrain from pointing knife at others, even in jest
  • Keep knives out of sinks at all times
  • Cut away from fingers or hands
  • Pass knives properly to others

Monday Night Kitchen Policy on Talking

Please be aware that many of our Monday Night Dinners occur when residential retreats are in session. As a result, there may be yogis in the kitchen who are practicing silence. The lead cook has the right and responsibility to ask volunteers for silence or functional talking as necessary to preserve the retreat container.

We hope that you understand the need for the above policies, as kitchens can be fast-paced environments. We hope the experience will be fun and filled with camaraderie, while we work, at the same time to insure the safest environment possible.

As always, we are grateful for your generous offer of service and time, and we look forward to seeing you!
