Work Retreatant Information
Spirit Rock offers work retreatant positions to candidates who meet the criteria below. In exchange for retreat tuition, work retreatants work approximately 5 hours per day in either the kitchen or housekeeping departments. Work retreatants are still invited to offer Dana to the retreat teachers and retreat staff at the end of the retreat.
Please read the following information and complete the application (linked below) if you meet the criteria. You must complete the linked application/survey form after the registration opening date (which is generally about 4 months before the retreat). We monitor these applications weekly so there is no need to follow up, we will contact you if you are selected.
Please note: Our policy is one Work Retreatant position per person, per year. An exception can be made if there are no other applicants or if we have a last minute cancellation and no other applicants are on the waiting list.
IMPORTANT: If you want to attend a retreat regardless of your being selected as the work retreatant or not, we advise that you go to our website and apply for the specific retreat as a regular applicant, as most of our retreats fill quickly and the retreat may be full by the time a work retreatant is chosen. If you are later chosen as the work retreatant, your payment will be refunded in full.
Work Retreatant Criteria
We ask that all work retreatants meet the following criteria:
• Candidates should have sat a retreat of at least five days at Spirit Rock.
• Candidates should be fully able-bodied people of average physical stamina (must be able to lift up to 50 lbs).
• Candidates must stay for the duration of their work assignment as outlined here:
Work retreatants arrive at 12:30 pm on opening day for lunch, training, and to assist as needed. During the retreat, the work retreatant normally works up to 5 non consecutive hours per day including closing day (no later than 3:00 pm).
Please do not apply if you will not be available to work a full shift on the closing day.

Work retreatants may miss some periods of walking meditation. It is possible, but unlikely, that a work retreatant could miss a sitting period or a period of movement practice (yoga, qigong, etc.). Work retreatants will be able to attend all Dharma talks.
If you wish to apply for one of these positions on a retreat that is currently open for registration, please click here to fill out the application.
Please note that this is the only path to a work retreatant position.
