During this traditional Insight Meditation retreat we will follow the advice of the Buddha and hold many of our sessions at the base of a grand old California oak tree, in the beautiful natural setting of Spirit Rock. People who have done meditation practice in nature are profoundly moved by the experience and often report a new sense of enchantment and connection with the world.
This retreat will be held in silence and follow a traditional schedule of sitting and walking meditation. The Dharma talks and discussions will present both traditional Buddhist views of self and reality, as well as some of the latest information from evolutionary biology, deep-ecology, and psychology to support and guide the meditations. The retreat is suitable for both beginning and advanced meditation students.
Recommended reading for this retreat is Wes Nisker's book Buddha's Nature.
Spirit Rock extends a special invitation to young adults (age 18-26) who wish to attend this retreat at a rate of $25 per night, on a first come, first serve basis. A limited number of special rates are available, please apply early.
Supported by the ongoing generosity of our sangha, we have begun construction on our lower campus for a permanent Community Hall and support buildings. Our upper campus, where your residential retreat occurs, is not part of the construction. Please refer to the Construction Map for the location of construction relative to the Retreat Hall.
While some ambient machinery sound may travel, it will not be continuous or nearby. Construction will take place during business work hours (Monday – Friday, 7:00am - 4:00pm) and on some Saturdays. We look forward to supporting your practice here at Spirit Rock.
