"Supported by the ongoing generosity of our sangha, we have the good fortune to begin construction in the spring of 2014 on our lower campus for a permanent Community Hall and support buildings. Our upper campus, where your residential retreat occurs, is not part of the construction.

While some ambient machinery sound may travel, it will not be continuous or nearby. Construction will take place during business work hours (Monday - Friday, 7:00am - 4:00pm) and on some Saturdays. Spirit Rock will be open throughout construction. Conditions for meditation practice are rarely perfect and environmental sounds are just another subject for our mindful attention. Teachers will give guidance on how to use it as a basis for your practice. Thank you for supporting our efforts and continuing your practicing at Spirit Rock during this time. We look forward to supporting you on retreat."

~ Spirit Rock Teachers Council

Important: This is an 8 Precept Retreat (which includes not taking solid food between midday and the following dawn):

Investigating our human condition through the teachings on the Three Characteristics (impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, not-self) brings us into deeper communion with our true nature and all that lives. Investigating experience in the light of this central teaching of the Buddha brings awareness to our habitual attachments and reactions to experience. Seeing this process clearly, we recognize the wisdom of letting go. Joy, inner contentment and confidence are the fruits of such release. From this place of strength and balance, we can explore our relationship to ourselves, as well as to the growing environmental challenges we all face. When we reside in the awakened mind, everything is teaching us.

The framework of the Eight Precepts, Noble Silence, chanting and simple ceremonies will provide a monastic container to hold and inspire us during this retreat. An optional daily period of yoga will be offered.

Spirit Rock offers this retreat on a dana basis. The word "dana" means generosity and simply translates into a heartfelt donation. At the end of the retreat, participants will be invited to offer dana donations in three categories: to support the retreat teachers, to support the retreat cooks and retreat managers, and to the Fund for Spirit Rock so that we can continue to offer a yearly monastic retreat on a dana basis. (A retreat of this length would normally have a minimum price of $500.) We invite you to give what is apprpriate for you.

Although there is no registration fee, a $125 deposit is required to register for the retreat. Registrants who cancel within four weeks of the retreat start date will not receive a refund of their deposit. Registrants who attend the retreat may request a refund of the deposit after the retreat is over.

We hope that a dana approach will make our monastic retreats accessible to more people, and that a cycle of generosity and gratitude will contribute to the sustainability of this offering.

The Eight Precepts:
1. Not intentionally killing or harming any living creatures.
2. Not stealing, or concerning oneself with the possessions of others.
3. Not engaging in sexual activity of any kind.
4. Not lying or using speech harmfully. (On retreat this precept is usually observed as Noble Silence--keeping the silence unless there is a practical necessity to speak.)
5. Not taking intoxicating drink or drugs.
6. Not eating after mid-day.
7. Not seeking amusements or wearing special bodily adornment. (On retreat one dresses and acts in a modest and restrained manner.)
8. Not using sleep indulgently.

Also remember that the cost above is priced as a sliding scale. Please pay at the highest level of the sliding scale that you can afford. This allows others who need to pay less the opportunity to attend. Fee is for room and board. Teaching and staffing of the retreats is by donation at the end of the retreat.
